Salem District's Bedford Residency, which covers localities served from Montvale, New London, Big Island, and Smith Mountain Lake Area Headquarters in Bedford County, and Callaway, Sydnorsville, Glade Hill, and Burnt Chimney Area Headquarters in Franklin County, is currently recruiting Heavy Equipment Operators to perform roadway and roadside maintenance duties. Successful candidates can operate diverse hand and power tools and heavy equipment (chain saw, weedeater, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motorgrader, tractor w/ attachments) and will perform diverse manual labor.

As a maintenance operator, you will:

  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • prepare work zones and perform traffic control
  • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and use equipment properly and safely
  • participate as a working team member performing manual labor such as: clearing drainage pipes and ditches, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and other diverse tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance on diverse equioment
  • operate diverse hand and power tools.
    VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

    Minimum QualificationsYou may meet minimal qualifications if you have:
    • knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
    • knowledge of roadway and roadside maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
    • demonstrated experience in operation of equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
    • ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
    • skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
    • ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter
    • ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
      Preferred QualificationsPreferred qualifications include:
      • valid CDL and applicable endorsements
      • recent experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation
      • experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
      • experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
      • Flagger certification and workzone experience.
        Special RequirementsSkills demonstration and background check is required if selected as a finalist. This includes:
        • Employment reference check and work history verification
        • DMV Records Check
        • Fingerprint-based criminal history records check with VA State police and FBI
          Additional required for CDL holders:
          • Full Query drug and alcohol history in FMCSA Clearinghouse - Register at: FMCSA Clearinghouse.
          • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
          • Federal DOT pre-employment physical
            Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

            This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

            The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all Executive Branch employees, including new hires, rehires or transfers, to disclose their vaccination status upon hire. Disclosure of vaccination status (and for those fully vaccinated, proof of vaccination) will be required during new employee orientation on the first day of work. Employees who are not vaccinated for any reason or choose not to disclose your vaccination status, will be required to be tested for COVID-19 once per week on an indefinite basis while employed with The Commonwealth of Virginia, and wear a face covering at work while indoors, outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained, and when riding in vehicles with others.

            If sufficient candidates are not identified to fill all vacancies at the Maintenance Operator II level, applicants from this recruitment may be considered for Maintenance Operator Apprentice level positions with hiring range of $30,983 to $33,000.

            This recruitment pool may be used to fill 1500 hourly wage Maintenance Operator positions at $13-$18 per hour (not eligible for additional state benefits).
