Responsibilities Lead Mental Health Tech - 12 Hour Shifts, 7a - 7p; 7p - 7a Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183 bed acute care and residential facility. For more than 30 years Poplar Springs Hospital has been guided by its mission of helping those who need the full continuum of behavioral health services. Our facility offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through our acute programs, adolescent residential programs, as well as programs for active duty military. Poplar Springs Hospital is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina. The Lead Mental Health Tech is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients. He/she will work closely with unit leadership to ensure program activities are developed, updated, and implemented per the unit's program schedule. The Lead Mental Health Tech will facilitate groups for patients and role model effective and efficient group facilitation skills. This role will be responsible for providing a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention, individual/family education groups and activities of daily living relative to patient's health and safety. The Lead Mental Health Tech is responsible for training new mental health techs and working with leadership in identifying staff development needs. This position will ensure mental health techs are completing patient observation rounds per facility policy and ensure all intervention notes are completed prior to end of the shift. Position will also assist with completing any make up interventions as needed. The Lead Mental Health Tech will facilitate huddle at shift change and ensure appropriate hand off is communicated to oncoming staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Hours will vary and applicants need to have flexibility with his/her availability. Qualifications Position Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including male and female children, adolescents and adults as well as dually diagnosed adults. In absence of these qualifications upon hire, must demonstrate ability to learn these concepts and develop these skills within reasonable time frame via the organization's orientation and training program . Licensure/Certification/Registration: American Heart Association CPR Required (offered on-site) Handle With Care Required (offered on-site) Valid Drivers' License Education/Experience: Bachelor degree preferred but not required 1 year experience as a Mental Health Tech at Poplar Springs Hospital or 2 years experience in a behavioral health environment General Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Interdepartmental Regulation of Children's Residential Facilities. (22VAC42-11-380 pg 43) Displays an understanding of the basic concepts of safe, supportive, nurturing, & therapeutic human interactions. Demonstrates understanding of program & philosophy & is able to interpret & implement patient care. Displays an active interest in learning. Demonstrates creativity & problem solving skills. Demonstrates leadership by training new employees. Effectively interacts with patients, peers, & families. Demonstrates ability to follow behavior program. . Understands & practices effective motivational techniques. Demonstrates consistent ability to problem-solve & communicate clearly, both verbally & in writing. Skills : Human behavior or principles of psychology preferred including therapeutic relationships & processes, age specific growth & development, limit setting, crisis & behavior management.
